There is a lot more than fear of death. There is
a key on the door. Breakwawy and my hands in a coma.

Always at the battle front, me, with a circus,
hardly any bread. A gift, having your life held by
 your child. Life in life. An extreme.

Balthasar Klossowski (or Kłossowski) de Rola (Fevereiro 29, 1908 Paris – Fevereiro 18, 2001 Rossinière, Suíça), mais conhecido por Balthus.

A sua carreira foi um exemplo de rejeição das convenções do mundo da arte. Insistia em que as suas obras eram para ser vistas e não objecto de texto crítico, e resistiu a todas as tentativas para lhe criarem um perfil biográfico. Num telegrama enviado à Tate Gallery durante a preparação da sua retrospectiva, em 1986, escreveu :

"NO BIOGRAPHICAL DETAILS. BEGIN: BALTHUS IS A PAINTER OF WHOM NOTHING IS KNOWN. NOW LET US LOOK AT THE PICTURES. REGARDS. B." 

"NADA DE PORMENORES BIOGRÁFICOS. COMECEM ASSIM: BALTHUS É UM PINTOR DE QUEM NADA SE SABE. AGORA, TOCA A OLHAR PARA OS QUADROS DELE. MELHORES CUMPRIMENTOS. B".
